PAT Testing process

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing) is a process which ensures that electrical appliances are tested and deemed safe to be used in the workplace by employees, members of the public and the self employed. Any appliance with a plug, that is used in the workplace, should be tested regularly to ensure safety.

After an initial visual check has been passed, the equipment can then be PAT Tested, using a variety of tests to carry out electrical inspection, including:

  • Earth Bond Test
  • Insulation Resistance Test
  • Load Test
  • Earth Leakage Test

Increasingly insurance companies are stipulating Portable Appliance Testing as a necessary condition of insurance on companies and failure to carry out regular PAT Testing may be taken into account when arriving at a settlement figure, if an incident occurs that is associated with an electrical appliance.
